Travel through the history of the bean bag
Bean bags were first created in 1969 and were used not only as furniture but also as photographic accessory. They became very popular in the 70s because they were something new and have known a decrease in demand in the 80s and 90s. Today, bean bags are making a comeback due to their superior comfort and health benefits. Bean bag is now a popular industry with thousands online stores and shops around the world. Manufacturers now offer a wide range of products that can be seen in hotels, libraries, restaurants, offices, by the beach or even on the boat.
How it all began
It originally began with the idea of three designers Chesare Paolini, Franco Teodoro and Piero Gatti who used to work for an Italian furniture company. The very first bean bags were made in leather and the origin filling was polystyrene foam. Their inspiration came from the staffs sitting on bags filled with Styrofoam during their morning tea and cigarette breaks.
Through the years, the increase in popularity causes the designers to make use of different types of materials in order to innovate and create various types of bean bags. In the 70s, the most popular materials were cotton, corduroy and canvas.
Bean Bags also became renowned among hippies who enjoyed the relaxation and comfort. They were also used in camper trailers because they could be easily relocated.
During the 80s and 90s, people tend to forget about the benefits of the bean bags and they were known for creating a mess with the filling spilled throughout the room.
Bean bags in 2016
In the last decade, bean bags have known a rise in its popularity, probably due to the wide selection of colors, shape and materials now available (polyester, outdura, cordura, nylon, leather, faux fur). You can today found bean bag chairs, loungers, pillows for your home, office, pool or even your dog. We can also personalize them with your name and logo.
